Strike in S Darfur due to high fuel prices

The Syndicate of Buses and Motors (rickshaws) of Nyala, South Darfur, began a strike on Monday due to high fuel prices and low transportation tariffs. They submitted a memo about this issue to Nyala’s county commissioner and other concerned institutions. The head of the Syndicate told Radio Dabanga that union members will be on strike for one day. The head of the Syndicate held a meeting on Monday with Nyala’s county commissioner and with the head of the security committee to discuss a solution for this problem. During this meeting they agreed that the price of the transportation tariffs will rise to 1 Sudanese Pound, instead of 800 shillings. The price of the fuel will remain the same. In north Nyala students from the basic and secondary schools demonstrated on Monday against high prices of basic commodities and the lack of electricity. They are calling for the fall of the regime. Policemen confronted the students during the demonstrations and prevented them from accessing the city center. Sources told Radio Dabanga there are many cases of arrests among the demonstrators but they did not yet know who exactly was arrested.
