South Darfur is contending with the spread of 'pest birds' in several of its localities, threatening the agricultural season. The news follows last week's announcement by East Darfur state, to spray pesticides against the birds.

The Agriculture Minister of South Darfur, Sabeel Ahmed Sabeel, revealed the spread of birds he named 'Zarzur', in Buram, El Radoom and Sunta localities, on Monday.

His Ministry also received reports of the emergence of the pest birds in El Salam locality. “Aircraft spraying of pesticides against the bird nests has continued for four days,” he said.

Regarding frictions between farmers and pastoralists, the Minister plans to hold a forum that brings together both sides in the northern areas of South Darfur, in an attempt to reach a solution to the tension.

Disputes between herders and farmers occur more often this time of year, as herders let their cattle graze on farmlands that have not yet been harvested.
