The Ministry’s decision to re-plan the markets in Delling and El Abassiya in South Kordofan has been met with opposition by shop owners in the towns this week.

A number of merchants have refused to shut-down their shops in the markets of Delling and El Abassiya, north of the state. The State Ministry of Urban Planning gave them a two-week deadline before the shops are to be removed.

The owners called Radio Dabanga on Monday, explaining that “about 1,400 poor families rely on these shops for their livelihood.”

One of the merchants in Delling said: “The government authorities plead to provide decent living conditions for citizens, while they are doing the opposite on the ground.”

The owners have demanded the responsible authorities repeal this decision.
