North Darfur receives 7.1 mn USD aid

The UNICEF-led program’s pilot will start in five prime localities The state of North Darfur was granted a financial aid of 7.1 million US dollars from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as a first instalment for the implementation of a multi-tiered program.  The program is likely to conduct projects in areas of education, water and environmental sanitation, health, nutrition and the fight against AIDS, as well as safety and wellbeing of children.  The move was implemented on the basis of an agreement signed by the Sudanese government and UNICEF to provide the state with 14 million USD of aid money. The total fund of the program is split between the government, which contributes an amount of five (5) million USD, and UNICEF, which makes a contribution of nine (9) million USD.  A UNICEF representative said that the organisation will implement its activities in all localities of North Darfur, with the first stage focusing on five areas, namely, El-Serif Beni Hussein, Saraf Omra, Kabkabiya, Tina and Kutum. This pilot project will help in the structuring of the aid model for the rest of the state.
