An Ethiopian soldier with the UN-African Union peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) lost his life on Thursday in an attack by unknown gunmen in an area between the city of El Geneina and the outlying UNAMID base. Susan Manuel, the deputy spokesperson of the UNAMID, told Radio Dabanga that the soldier lost his life as a result of being hit by bullets in the attack and stated that the attack took place when the soldiers of the UNAMID were carrying out their regular patrol in the city. Manuel also confirmed that the UNAMID cannot determine which side caused the attack, nor the motives behind the attack. Correspondents in El Geneina verified that another soldier was wounded in the attack but the deputy spokesperson told Radio Dabanga that she could not confirm whether there was another wounded soldier besides the deceased one.
