Two couples assaulted, women gang-raped in Darfur

Two couples were allegedly assaulted “by pro-government militiamen” as they returned to Hila Beeda near to Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur, on Sunday evening. The women were then repeatedly raped, according to one of the men. Speaking to Radio Dabanga from Zalingei hospital, one of the victims said that he, his wife, and another couple were returning home after tending their farms, when they were accosted by four militiamen. “They whipped us and beat us with the butts of their rifles, before tying me and the other man to a tree. They then took turns raping our wives,” he said. The victim complained that while they have reported the incident to the police, “no action has yet been taken to apprehend the perpetrators”. The sheikh said that one of the alleged rapists, “named Hassan Adam Ibra”, has been apprehended and detained, and that the incident is being reported to the police as well as Unamid for investigation.
