‘Tribal boot camps must go’: South Darfur sheikhs

Leaders of Rahad El Berdi locality in South Darfur have demanded that the government dismantle the military training camps of tribes in the region. A delegation of notables of the locality headed by Sheikh Abdulrahman Bishara said in a press statement at Parliament on Monday, that if the military training camps for the tribes are not dismantled, the situation in the region would be “back to square one”. The area saw the fiercest tribal conflicts between Salamat, Misseriya, and Taisha tribesmen. The delegations asked the Ministers of Defence and Interior to expel the Chadian commander of the joint military force of Sudan, Chad, and the Central African Republic (CAR) who they accuse of “interfering in the affairs of Sudan”. In their meeting with the Security and Defence Committee, they discussed security issues and the implications of the conflict in the neighbouring CAR on the region. They highlighted that hundreds of refugees endure extremely challenging humanitarian conditions in the locality as a result of the conflict in CAR. File photo
