Renewed attacks on villages in Darfur's East Jebel Marra leave 11 dead

April 2 – 2018 SAWANI / FEINA At least 11 people were killed and 21 others were injured in attacks by paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on villages in South Darfur’s East Jebel Marra on Saturday. Multiple sources told Radio Dabanga that members of the RSF, Sudan’s main militia, attacked villages in the area of Sawani on Saturday morning. They were backed by more than 100 gunmen.

Two villages 10 kilometres north-east of Libei were attacked as well, causing the people to flee to nearby valleys and mountain tops. Sources of Radio Dabanga mentioned three children among the 11 people that were killed.

Video of the earlier devastation at Feina village in South Darfur's East Jebel Marra and militias showed completely burnt houses. The village is abandoned. A resident of the village standing at the ruins of his house, said the militias burned everything and left nothing, not even livestock. “Villagers are still in the mountains caves in a very bad humanitarian situation.”

During the first fighting in March, the Sudanese army and militia forces attacked the area of Jawa, south of Deribat, in an attempt to clear the region of the last rebel strongholds. Five days later, fighting erupted in the areas of Feina and Dawa. Thousands of people were displaced.

Last week President Omar Al Bashir extended a cease-fire for another three months, an announcement which Sudanese armed movements including the SLM-MM have called “misleading”.

Students clash in Sudan's El Gezira Aba, hundreds evicted from dorms

April 1 – 2018 EL GEZIRA ABA / ABU JUBEIHA A student was injured and three others were detained after fighting broke out between student groups at El Imam El Mahdi University in White Nile state last Wednesday. On Friday, security officers evicted about 300 students from the university’s boarding house.

Clashes between militant student members of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and other students erupted at the Faculty of Islamic Sharia and Law of El Imam El Mahdi University in El Gezira Aba. “Musa Zarroug was seriously wounded, and had to be transferred to Kosti Hospital,” a student told Radio Dabanga. “Moatasim Mousa and two others were detained.”

On Thursday, the students handed a petition to the El Gezira Aba Interior Department, demanding the students’ release. “Yet when we returned, we found security and police agents stationed in front of the dormitory. They said we were evicted and prevented us from entering the buildings to take our belongings.” Some students found refuge in another boarding house.

On Monday, March 26, at least 14 Darfuri students at the University of East Kordofan were injured and 17 others were arrested, after a protest meeting. A student explained that security forces and police broke-up the demonstrations using excessive violence.
