Social Peace Conference begins in South Darfur

The three-day Social Peace Conference organised by the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) is due to begin on Saturday in Nyala city in South Darfur. It will be attended by civil society representatives. “The workshop will give all members of the community the opportunity to give their views on the social peace issues in South Darfur”, the head of the Preparation Committee El Shartai Ibrahim Abdallah said. At the end, they aim to reach a shared vision and to recommendations in preparation for the General Conference on Social Peace. The Committee’s spokesman, Osman El Tom said that the workshop will discuss three papers: the genesis of tribal conflicts, their causes and proposed solutions, the use of hawakeer (lands traditionally used by a particular clan or tribal group) in Darfur, the role of the native administration in conflict resolution, and how to develop the native administration to achieve reconciliation.
