Nierteti residents assaulted in Central Darfur

A number of residents of Nierteti locality, Central Darfur, were beaten by militiamen on Sunday and Monday.

A witness told Radio Dabanga that on Monday, a group of pro-government militiamen assaulted people who were on their way to their farms or to gather firewood and straw in areas south of Nierteti: Wadi Faw, Kubri El Nahal, and Boro. They were beaten and whipped. The militiamen stole their money, mobile phones, and belongings, before forcing them to return to Nierteti.

Another witness reported that militiamen, riding motorcycles and horses, occupied the water wells west of Nierteti hospital on Monday. They beat a number of owners of water tanks and carts who arrived at the wells, and prevented them from taking water.

The witness explained that the assaults may have occurred against the backdrop of a stabbing in which a militiaman was wounded on Sunday night. He claimed that the militiamen are taking vengeance against the residents.

Three people in Wadi Faw were stabbed by militiamen on their farms last week. In Nierteti, two secondary school students sustained bullet wounds when army soldiers shot at them on Friday, 23 October. That same evening, a mobile phone shop at Nierteti’s main market was plundered.
