The farmers were on the way from the Gireida camps for the displaced to Eedan village to tend their lands there, a relative of one of the victims reported to Radio Dabanga.

“They were passing Nabagaya village in four rikshaat [motor tricycle rickshaws], when a group of militiamen in military uniforms riding motorcycles suddenly began to shoot at them,” he said.

“Kaboura Abdelrazeg Hashim was killed instantly. Mohamed Ali Mohamed, Musa Ahmed Suleiman, Adam Daoud Ali, Ibrahim Mohamed Ateem and Um Gutiya Khater Hashim, all from the Eedan camp for the displaced in Gireida town, were wounded.”

The source added that the displaced in Gireida have lodged a complaint to the Governor of South Darfur about the attacks against displaced farmers in the locality. “They pointed to previous pledges of the governor done in June, when he requested the displaced in the state to return to their places of origin and start to cultivate their lands again.

“Yet, we are prone to attacks by the janjaweed, while the police do not intervene. Therefore we have requested protection from Unamid as well.”
