Design prize for Paediatric Centre in Port Sudan

The Paediatric Centre in Port Sudan has received an international architecture prize. The hospital design in East Sudan meets western quality standards while respecting local traditions, according to the architects.The 2013 Curry Stone Design Prize will be received by the Italian developers at Studio Tamassociati and Emergency. The jury awards the architects’ design for free health care facilities in war-torn areas of Africa. The Curry Stone Foundation honours designers addressing issues such as access to food and water, health care, and education. The winner receives a grant of $40,000. The Paediatric Centre in Port Sudan opened on December 26 in 2011 and offers free and high quality medical care to children up to 14 years old. By now, more than 32,000 children have been treated by the outpatients clinics, according to the Centre. The Italian designers of Tamassociati and Emergency were also involved in building the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Soba, south of Khartoum.
