Camp leader criticises inaction of international community

The coordinator of camps in North Darfur, Umda Ahmed Ateem has criticised the silence of the international community for turning a blind eye to the daily killing, rape, displacement and looting that continue to terrorise civilians in the region. In an interview with Radio Dabanga Umda Ateem said it is shameful that the UN security council has not implemented any of the 17 resolutions drafted on Darfur. He described the humanitarian situation in the camps for internally displaced people at the very least as ‘disastrous’, stating that famine, the impune rule of government militia, murder, intimidation of civilians and rape as a weapon are widespread and part of everyday life. Ateem added that if the situation in Darfur along with the rest of Sudan is allowed to continue to drift, the situation will reach full devastation. He stressed that the missing peace in Darfur will only be realised once those responsible have been tried and brought to justice.
