Arab League pledges $6m for Darfur

The Arab League signed an agreement yesterday with the Sudanese government to fund a development project for Darfur worth $6 million. The commissioner of humanitarian aid, Suleiman Abdul Rahman and Arab league representative Salah Halima signed the contract which pledges fund to reconstruct 12 villages in the region. Suleiman told the state owned Sudan news agency SUNA that the plan includes providing health, water and electricity services along with building schools and mosques to prepare an environment for displaced families and refugees to return.  However displaced people were skeptical saying this was purposely misleading to deceive public opinion about the government and the Arab League’s support. Zalingei camp’s coordinator told Radio Dabanga that they have heard much talk of Arab League backed projects since the Darfur crisis began, but have witnessed no actual results on the ground. He called on the Arab League to resist providing economic support to the government which he described as ‘genocidal’, and said if the League wants to contribute to solving the crisis it should work with the Sudanese people to remove the regime from power and hand over its indicted leaders to the International Criminal Court.
