40 per cent of Sudanese births not registered: Unicef

About 40 per cent of the children in Sudan are not registered at birth. In the five states of Darfur, the figures are lower, with West Darfur having the lowest rate of unregistered children under five years old: 23,3 per cent. According to a new Unicef report, Every Child’s Birth Right, released in December, the births of nearly 230 million children under-five (about one in three children) around the world have never been registered. For Sudan, the average of registered children under the age of five turned out to be 59.3 per cent. The Northern State of the country tops the list with 94.3 births of all children under-five registered, while South and West Darfur show the lowest rates, 33 and 23.3 per cent respectively.
