Zam Zam camp facing water crisis

Zam Zam camp for displaced people near El Fasher is facing an acute water crisis as the price of a barrel of water has reached 12 Sudanese pounds. Activists at the camp told Radio Dabanga that the approaching summer and intense heat has increased the camp’s need for water, along with the short operating duration of the eight water stations in the camp, currently one hour in the morning and two hours in the evening. They said the increase in the number of camp residents is also adding pressure to the water sources. They stressed that a quick solution requires the organisations running the pumps to increase the working hours from three to six each day, and establishing more water pumps to serve the growing needs of Zam Zam’s displaced community.
