Women, girls gang-raped, schoolgirl suicide in South Darfur

Six women and two girls were gang-raped in Buram locality, South Darfur, on Friday. On the same day, a 13 year-old girl committed suicide in El Sunta locality, reportedly to escape a forced marriage. “A group of 20 gunmen on horseback assaulted the women and two girls of about ten years-old when they were tending their farmlands in Buram locality on Friday. They raped them alternately. The victims were transferred in a dire physical and mental state to the Buram Hospital for treatment,” a medical staff member of the hospital told Radio Dabanga. Forced marriage A 13-year-old school girl of El Jurra village in El Sunta locality, South Darfur, hanged herself on Friday because she did not want to get married. “Her parents had told her that she was going to marry the son of her paternal uncle. She rejected the marriage but her parents insisted. A 13-year-old school girl of El Jurra village in El Sunta locality, South Darfur, hanged herself on Friday because she did not want to get married.

“Her parents had told her that she was going to marry the son of her paternal uncle. She rejected the marriage but her parents insisted. She was found hanging from a tree near the village on Friday morning,” the girl’s teacher told Radio Dabanga.

“She just had started class 6 of the basic school when her parents kept her at home because of the wedding,” the teacher added. “Each school year, she was the best of the entire class.”
