Woman raped east of Zalingei

On Wednesday a young woman was raped by two armed men near Wadi Dul Beja displaced persons camp, east of Zalingei, in West Darfur. A female source told Radio Dabanga the woman ventured out of the camp with her sister and mother to collect firewood. They were intercepted by two gunmen traveling on camels that attacked them with whips and sticks. The mother and sister managed to escape, but the young woman was brutally beaten and raped. The source said the incident was reported to the local police and hybrid UN/African Union Mission in Darfur forces. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment. The source complained that displaced women living in insecure camps regularly suffer from repeated attacks when going about their daily business, in light of the expulsion of international organizations by the government. She expressed hope that security and stability would eventually prevail to stop the violence and rape of already vulnerable women.
