WFP to census newly displaced in South Darfur

The World Food Program (WFP) has begun conducting a comprehensive survey of newly displaced persons in South Darfur “in preparation for the distribution of food to them”. The spokesman for the Association of Displaced Persons and Refugees of Darfur, Hussein Abu Sharati, told Radio Dabanga that the WFP declined to adopt the list of names compiled by the Association’s committee, but decided to conduct its own comprehensive survey, which started on Sunday. Abu Sharati described this as “a good move in the right direction, especially as the newly displaced are facing poor humanitarian conditions”. Appealing to humanitarian organisations, he underlined the need to distribute aid to those affected before Eid Al Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan, along with providing them with plastic sheets and tents so that they can face the rainy season.
