WFP says Zam Zam numbers around 34,000, not 90,000

The World Food Programme has said the number of displaced people registered at last count in Zam Zam camp is actually around 34,000, rather than the 90,000 put forward by camp representatives. The WFP has registered newborns and additions to the camp but there are a lot of made up names, said WFP field coordinator Adham Mesallami to Radio Dabanga from Khartoum. He also said there is a crisis between the WFP and camp elders in Kalma who are still refusing the registration process out of fear they will be sent back to their villages. The WFP insists on the registration process to update its food distribution lists and account for those present at the camp. This has caused a stalemate situation for more than five months with no food aid being delivered to the camp. The field coordinator said he does not understand why the camp elders insist on refusing to cooperate with the programme to get their food rations.
