WFP rations reach 4,300 newly displaced in South Darfur

The World Food Programme (WFP) distributed sorghum and lentils to the newly displaced people in Kalma camp, South Darfur, on Tuesday. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, Saleh Eisa, the Secretary-General of Kalma camp explained to Radio Dabanga that the food aid consisted of about 680 large sacks of sorghum and 96 sacks of lentils. “This means about eight pounds of sorghum per capita, in addition to an estimated half a kilo lentils per capital,” Eisa said. He pointed out that about 4,300 newly displaced were covered by the distribution, “including those who have been registered and verified by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM)”. “At least 5,000 newcomers did not receive a ration, as they did not obtain a registration card yet. More than 6,000 newly displaced have not finished their registration procedure so far.” Therefore, the Secretary-General of the Kalma camp demanded the IOM to accelerate the completion of the registration and verification procedures, and continue with the distribution of food rations to the newly displaced people on monthly basis. He appealed to humanitarian organisations to provide water, shelter materials, plastic sheets, utensils, blankets, and tins.
