Renewed calls for Darfur rebels to join DDPD

Qatar’s deputy Prime Minister and the head of the African Union-UN Mission in Darfur (Unamid), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, called on the Darfuri non-signatory rebel groups to join the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and participate in the national dialogue on Tuesday. The African Union-UN joint chief mediator Ibn Chambas and his accompanying delegation discussed the latest developments on the Darfur peace process with Ahmed bin Abdullah El Mahmoud in Doha. Former joint mediator Djibril Bassolé also attended the meeting. Ibn Chambas briefed El Mahmoud about the outcomes of the meetings held in Addis Ababa between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North. “All the parties welcomed the initiative of the President of Sudan for national dialogue”, the statement said. Solutions for DarfurThe DDPD was signed between the Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) in 2011, and by a dissident faction of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in 2013.On 7 March Ibn Chambas facilitated a meeting between the head of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamani-Zuma, and two rebel leaders, Dr Jibril Ibrahim (JEM) and Minni Minawi (SLM-MM).
