UXO kills two in North Darfur’s Tawila

Two people were killed in an explosion in the area of Tabit in Tawila locality on Wednesday.
Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a relative of one of the victims reported that Hawa Suleiman Saleh (25) and Ismail Jaqoub Adam (22) died when they triggered an item of unexploded ordnance (UXO) near the village of Tangarara, 15 kilometres south of Tabit.
“The incident occurred when they returned from collecting firewood near the village. Their donkeys were killed too.”
Years of conflict have left Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile littered with potentially deadly explosives and munitions (UXO). Radio Dabanga appeals to listeners not to touch any ‘unexploded’ grenades or other ammunition found in the field. Mark its position clearly to alert others, and report it immediately to a camp elder, the local police, and/or Unamid.
