UNAMID announces Gambari’s departure

On Tuesday August 28, UNAMID’s new spokesperson, Ms. Aicha Elbasri, confirmed to Radio Dabanga that Ibrahim Gambari’s duties with UNAMID were completed on 31 July 2012. Ibrahim Gambari was UNAMID’s Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur. According to Ms. Elbasri, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced in a report on 16 July 2012 that Gambari would “complete his assignment with UNAMID” by the end of July. She added that Ms. Aïchatou Mindaoudou Souleymane will substitute Mr. Gambari until the UN Secretary General appoints a new person for the function. Ibrahim Gambari served as the Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur for two years and a half, from 1 January 2010 until 31 July 2012.
