UN peacekeeping budget for Sudan close to $3 billion

An official of the United Nations in New York said that the peacekeeping budget for Sudan is nearly three billion US dollars. Jack Christofides, Team Leader of the Sudan Integrated Operational Team, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, said Tuesday, “The peacekeeping budget alone for Sudan is close on three billion dollars.”The UN has two peaceekeping missions in Sudan, one in Darfur and one in South Sudan. The UN also sponsors a mediation team under a separate mandate. Christofides noted that the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur is the largest UN peacekeeping mission in the world. Christofides was speaking at a forum organized by the UN Department of Public Information.
