On Sunday, a UN delegation met with representatives from Zam Zam internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in North Darfur to discuss the role of the joint UN/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). A participant at the meeting told Radio Dabanga that three UN representatives accompanied by a group from UNAMID asked camp leaders and mayors, about their perceptions of the role of UNAMID in relation to the services it provides.Camp leaders told the delegation that UNAMID is ‘unable to provide complete security and protect IDPs’, citing the murders, rapes, lootings and robberies that continue to terrorise camp residents. Participants also accused the Mission of failing to stop the attacks or comprehensively report on those events. Camp residents told the delegation that UNAMID does not provide them with services such as water, education and shelter which IDPs still require. The witness added that IDPs do not believe the head of UNAMID, Ibrahim Gambari is neutral, as he has ‘announced security in the region as stable, and declared that large numbers of displaced people have returned to their villages.’
