UN: 1.1 Billion USD necessary for Sudan in 2012

During a press conference yesterday in Khartoum Mark Cutts, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, expressed his concern regarding challenges the Darfur region faces. The challenges mentioned by Cutts involve lack of primary health care, training of midwives and children vaccination campaigns. The lack of finance for air transportation services for aid was also mentioned. Cutts said that, despite the killing incidents, new displacements and fears of food insecurity due to poor harvest, Darfur has been relatively stable. He added that the relative stability in parts of Darfur allowed 178.000 displaced persons to return home since January 2011. During the press conference Cutts stated that Sudan urgently needs to assist 4 million people in conflict zones and that USD 1.1 Billion will be necessary in 2012 for the country to meet its humanitarian needs.
