Trader injured as ‘Sudanese soldiers’ raid Guldo market

A merchant is reported to have been seriously injured when ‘elements of the Sudanese army’ allegedly raided the market of Guldo in Central Darfur on Saturday. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that the motive for the attack was apparently “to retrieve army food supplies illegally sold to merchants”. The merchant Younis Mohamed was wounded when the soldiers stormed the market, firing into the air. “The soldiers then looted seven shops,” a witness confirmed. Sources say the soldiers allege that the commander of the nearby Tainat military garrison illegally sold military food supplies to some of the market traders on Thursday. They were therefore “retrieving what was theirs”. The injured merchant was transferred to Nertiti hospital for treatment. A woman has reportedly been injured in an attempted rape attack near the village of Abur in Kabkabiya locality in North Darfur. Arafa Mohamed Ismail fractured her hand when she and three other women were attacked by “pro-government militiamen” as they were tending their farm on Sunday. A witness told Radio Dabanga that the militiamen were intent on raping the women, but “were driven off by passers-by”. The injured woman is receiving treatment at Kabkabiya hospital.
