Three women from besieged West Darfur camp raped

Three women are in critical condition after being repeatedly raped by a gang of militiamen in West Darfur.

A sheikh of Sese camp for the displaced, north of Murnei in Kereinik locality told Radio Dabanga that the three victims were returning to the camp on Monday evening.

“The men raped them alternately from 7 pm till 11 pm,” he said. They were then severely beaten with axes and knives. All of them received serious head wounds, and are in critical condition.

The sheikh said that the militant herdsmen who have been besieging the camp since Friday last week are still beleaguering the town.

As reported by Radio Dabanga yesterday, last week, a woman relative of the herders was found dead in the wilderness not far from the camp. The herders immediately accused the displaced of killing the woman,” the coordinator of Murnei camps reported.

“They surrounded the camp on Friday and threatened to kill anyone who would attempt to enter or leave the camp.”

He reported that the people in the camp are living in great fear, as the herdsmen have threatened to set fire to the camp. “What is worse is that they are unable to fetch water from the well, visit their farms, or buy daily requirements from Murnei.”
