♦ North Darfur to resettle 135,000+ displaced from three camps

October 16 – 2018 EL FASHER North Darfur State has approved a plan to turn the camps for displaced people into permanent residential areas on Monday. The first phase includes the resettlement of 45,000 families.

State spokesman El Hadi Burma Saleh said they aim to resettle the families from Abu Shouk, El Salam and Zamzam camps in the first phase of the plan. Each of the camps have populations of tens of thousands of people. Considering a family holds three members at a minimum, this means the moving of at least 135,000 people. “Each family wishing to settle would be given a free piece of land with complete procedures,” Burma Saleh added.

Last June, Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) announced that displaced people in Darfur have the options to be resettled in the area where they are, or in another area – such as their areas of origin.

The voluntary return of displaced people and refugees remains the main challenge for the Sudanese government seen the large numbers of people still living in the relative safety of the camps. According to the latest global numbers, the conflict and ensuing insecurity had still displaced over 2.7 million people in Darfur.

Four more die of chikungunya in Kassala, eastern Sudan

October 14 – 2018 KASSALA / JEBEIT Four people, including a child and a woman, died of chikungunya fever in Kassala. Health centres in the various districts of Kassala town are still reporting new patients, despite a significant decrease in the number of cases.

In Red Sea state, in Jebeit, three new cases were recorded in a students’ dormitory. “Clinics in Jebeit receive an average of seven patients a day,” one of the students told this station. He attributed the outbreak of the disease to a lack of mosquito nets.

Chikungunya is characterised by an abrupt onset of fever, frequently accompanied by joint pain. Most patients recover fully within weeks. Serious complications are not common but the disease can contribute to the cause of death in malnourished and older people. Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed in a report that laboratory tests of samples from infected people in Kassala state show cases of dengue fever along with chikungunya. The dengue virus is carried by the same mosquitoes that carry chikungunya.

The Kassala state Ministry of Health reported that the total number of people infected with chikungunya fever was 15,944 cases until Thursday. The outbreak of chikungunya fever, popularly known as kankasha, began in August after heavy rains hit the state and El Gash river flooded large pieces of land.
