The presence of a large number of Sudanese paramilitary combatants in Nierteti, Central Darfur, sparked terror among the local population and resulted in the closure of shops.

The police found the body of one of their comrades dumped in the area of Garsila on Monday morning, a witness told Radio Dabanga. “Later, the paramilitaries arrived heavily armed in vehicles and riding motorcycles.

“They remained in Nierteti until the evening and did not attack anyone.” As a precaution, however, shop owners in the market closed their doors and people quickly went home for shelter.

Paramilitary fighters wounded a woman and her daughter last week when they attempted to steal a donkey.
