Sudanese teachers threaten strike as well

The threat of a strike looms in the Sudanese public schools, with government teachers planning to stop working unless their demands are addressed. In a statement on Sunday, the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee raised the prospect of a strike action if their working conditions and payments will not improve soon.

The teachers complain about a deteriorating school environment, and strongly condemn the collection of fees from the students for maintenance of the buildings and other requirements. They demand a rise of their salaries as well, “to meet the requirements of a decent life”.

The statement also called for the need to stop “unfair deductions from our salaries amounting to nearly 20 per cent by parasitic bodies without offering any services in return”.

On Thursday, medical doctors working at government hospitals across the country embarked on a strike, demanding protection while working, a pay rise, and better working conditions. Three days later, medics in 90 hospitals are on strike.
