Sudanese army, rebels exchange accusations

Second Vice-President of Sudan, Hassabo Mohamed Abdelrahman on Wednesday stated that “the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) military operations against the rebel movements will go side-by-side with the government’s openness to engage in dialogue,” on Wednesday. During the celebration of the 58th anniversary in Kadugli, South Kordofan, Abdelrahman also referred to recent victories claimed by the Sudanese army in South Kordofan, calling on “those holding arms to resort to wisdom and respond positively to peace calls”. ‘Army defeated rebels’ The spokesman for the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), Col. Sawarmi Khaled Saad, announced that their forces have repulsed the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid El Nur on a trade convoy while it was en route from Nyala, South Darfur, to Zalingei in Central Darfur. He claimed the Sudanese army troops “killed many insurgents, seized 14 Land Cruisers, and large quantities of weapons and ammunitions”. In a statement to the Sudan News Agency, the colonel said that the army also repulsed an attack of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) on Dalami town in South Kordofan, causing the death of a number of women and children. He added that the rebel troops also had plundered the property the citizens in the area. The SRF strongly denied the statements of the SAF spokesman, in particular that rebel forces had looted property of citizens after the Wednesday attack on the garrison of Dalami. Arnu Ngutulu Lodi, the spokesman for the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) told Radio Dabanga that the SRF troops targeted military sites of the Sudan Armed Forces and its militias and never the property of citizens. “We have taken up arms against the government for the sake of the citizens and their property,” he stressed. Lodi said that Sawarmi’s wanted to mislead the public opinion and cover large defeats in South Kordofan. “While they themselves have caused the death of a number of civilians, during the air raids on Dalami town, after we had taken the garrison.” He added that the SRF troops on Monday destroyed a Sudanese army camp in Fayo, west of Dalami in the Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan.
