Specialists partially resume work at Nyala hospital in South Darfur

Specialists at the hospital of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, partially resumed their work on Monday, after a stop of more than a week in protest against the deterioration of the working environment in the hospital, and non-payment of financial dues. Speaking to Radio Dabanga a medical source at the hospital reported that the crisis of the medical specialists has not yet been resolved. The hospital’s management and the Ministry of Health have reached a partial agreement with the striking specialists, stipulating the payment of physicians’ financial dues in instalments, provided that they treat emergency cases. The striking doctors have demanded the payment of financial arrears covering several years, housing allowance, an attractive environment, in addition to new medical staff. A nurse of the department of surgery told Radio Dabanga that the Nyala hospital has been experiencing a “real health catastrophe. Even simple, same-day surgeries for children could not be carried out in the hospital because of the strike.” File photo Related: South Darfur hospital administration reverses decision after doctors strike again (5 October 2013)
