The imprisonment of an artist in Sudan's Kassala has led to discontent among citizens. The man had defended a girl against a security officer.

The court in Kassala has ruled against Beja singer Ibrahim Nurai to one year imprisonment and a fine of SDG10,000 ($1,630) on charges of obstructing a public official while performing his duty.

Nurai clashed with a security officer about a girl in the area of Shajrab in Kassala. The girl was stopped by the officer on the street at night, after which he threatened her without an apparent reason, and abused her, a listener from Kassala told Radio Dabanga. “Security officers often threaten girls in our village for no reason.”

The listener said that many people in Kassala have expressed their rejection of the ruling, describing it as “unjust”. “Nurai was doing his duty to defend the girl.”

He demanded the authorities to immediately release the singer.
