Sick man dies in Port Sudan prison

On Sunday, a man died in Port Sudan prison following the deterioration of his health, and lack of medical care. “Jeilani Mohamed Ahmed was serving a prison term of one month after a security court ruling, but while being in detention his health deteriorated. As he did not receive any medical care, he died on Sunday’, multiple sources reported to Radio Dabanga from the Red Sea State capital. “It is the fourth time within less than a month that an inmate dies inside a prison or police cell, or in a security detention centre in Port Sudan,’ an activist said. “On 3 August, two people died after they had been flogged. A third prisoner was tortured to death on 21 July in the Deim Arab police station,” he noted. Besides ill-treatment of the detainees and overcrowded cells, the various detention facilities in the city lack essential services such as clean drinking water and proper nutrition. The police so far have not taken any clear measures to investigate his death.
