S Darfur employees protest against salary cuts

Public sector employees in South Darfur have protested on Wednesday, 26 December, against governor Hammad Ismail’s decision to cut one day’s salary of each of the State’s employees ‘in support of the war effort’. The employees were surprised by the deduction of a day’s salary on the December payment ‘in support of the war effort’ and told Radio Dabanga that they had refused their incomplete salaries. The accountants and cashiers informed them it was a decision made by the state governor and that the ministry of finance was ‘forced to obey’. An employee noted that the amounts deducted range between 10 Sudanese pounds (laborers) and 14 to 27 pounds for senior employees. Some of them commented that “the current situation is already alarming, without additional pay cuts”. For its part, the labor union asserted they have not been informed of any such decision.File photo
