Riot police and security agents dispersed a sit-in by residents of the El Jireif East residential area in Khartoum with tear gas and arrested their representative on Monday.

One of the demonstrators against land seizure by the government spoke to Radio Dabanga. He said that 23 vehicles of the security apparatus arrived in the neighbourhood and started to disperse and attack the protestors, firing tear gas and using sticks to beat them.

The witness said that the spokesman for the people of El Jireif, Badruldin El Haj, has been detained.

“We confronted the security force and drew them back to outside our sit-in at El Jireif square,” the demonstrator said. Residents started their protest against the confiscation of residential lands on Sunday.

“The situation is still tense. But we will continue adhering to our demands until they recover our lands seized by the Government.”
