‘Record rainfall levels’ in North Darfur destroy 2,000 homes

Heavy rainfall across North Darfur, which reached record levels on Thursday, led to the “full destruction” of homes of at least 2,000 families, in line with preliminary figures. Recent storms in South Darfur caused the death of 13 elderly and Nyala estimates current losses at SDG1 million ($225,552).Osman Kibir, the governor of North Darfur, said the localities of El Fasher, Mellit, El Kuma, and El Malha witnessed record rainfall levels ranging between 65 and 95mm. This damaged houses, shops and properties of citizens, in addition to government facilities in the state capital El Fasher. “This requires urgent action to bring relief to North Darfur,” Kibir said.Residents of Nyala and surrounding camps for displaced in South Darfur have also suffered significant losses as a result of the rains.Hussein Abu Sharati, spokesman for the Association of Displaced persons and Refugees of Darfur, told Radio Dabanga that 13 elderly died due to heavy storms that fell on Wednesday and Thursday on the area. Four hundred homes were also destroyed.“Seven of the victims died on Thursday and another six on Friday due to complications caused by the rain. Besides, new arrivals are lacking tarpaulins and tents. They are now living out in the open,” Abu Sharati said. The spokesman is asking aid organisations to “move and develop a plan to cover the pits, ponds and pools of water” formed at the camps by the rains. Abu Sharati is also asking agencies to provide tents and tarpaulins to camps’ new arrivals.Merchants and citizens of Nyala told Radio Dabanga that storms led to the “flooding and collapse” of dozens of shops in the city, including those of the main market, which saw several goods being washed away.Rains also destroyed several houses, mainly in the districts of Al Wadi, Jebel, Al Jeer, Taiba and Texas, and inundated the headquarters of the state government’s secretariat, the ground floor of a TV station, and Sudatel Company buildings.
