Rains, floods destroy dam, homes in Sudan
Flash floods washed away the Daren Daren dam in eastern Sudan on Sunday. In North Darfur, hundreds of shelters collapsed.
The destroyed Daren Daren dam connected Hameshkoreib with Kassala, Sheikh Ibrahim Nur, leader of the National Umma Party in Kassala State, reported to Radio Dabanga.
The residents of Hameshkoreib fled to the surrounding mountains, and are suffering from a lack of clean drinking water and food, he said.
He added that the Kassala-Port Sudan road is still closed in the area north of Aroma.
Torrential rains caused the collapse of 465 shelters in the new site for displaced people in Tabit in Tawila locality on Sunday.
The shelters belonged to families who fled the fighting in Jebel Marra in the first half of this year, an activist explained to this station.
“The affected have lost their sparse belongings,” he said. “They are now taking refuge in schools in the area. They are living in dire humanitarian conditions, with no food or cover.”
He added that flash floods in the area washed away a Hilux vehicle.
