Rains cause damage and destruction in Central Darfur

Heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday destroyed 407 houses and several toilets in the camps for displaced persons in Nertiti, Central Darfur. Residents told Radio Dabanga that tarpaulins – an essential component of shelter for the displaced – were also badly damaged. “The rain, which continued for the last week, has now led to the collapse of 350 houses in the southern part of the camp, 28 in the northern part and 29 at nearby camp Khor Ramla,” a representative of the Nertiti displaced told Radio Dabanga. “Dozens of families are affected and must live in the open without food, shelter, or medicine. The pools of stagnant water breed flies and mosquitoes, so there is a real danger of the spread of disease.” The representative appealed to the authorities and humanitarian organisations to provide assistance to the affected families, especially with tents and tarpaulins, and asked for assistance in draining the ponds.File photo
