Protest by North Darfur tribesmen at Sudan parliament

On Sunday, a group of Beni Hussein tribesmen from North Darfur staged a demonstration in front of the National Assembly in Omdurman, in protest against the increasing number of attacks by the Abbala. The speaker of the Parliament, El Fateh Izzeldin, refused to meet the protesters and receive their memorandum. The protesters described his refusal as “a disregard of our case”, and threatened to continue demonstrating, the head of the Beni Hussein Consultative Council, Masar El Doma, told Radio Dabanga. The memorandum that the tribesmen wanted to hand to the Parliament, mentioned the killing of 1,013 Beni Hussein, and the injury of 700 others, El Doma said. The head of the Beni Hussein Consultative Council said that their memo demands the government to restore the rule of law, and to lift the Abbala siege on the roads. He warned for a famine looming in the region, as “the Abbala are besieging most areas in the locality since four months”. “The people of El Sareif Beni Hussein are suffering from a shortage of food and medicines because of the insecurity and the road blocks. Prices are more than skyrocketing.  A pound of sugar now costs SDG20 ($3.50), and a piece of soap SDG15 ($2.60).” File photo: Abbala tribesmen in North Darfur (Albert González Farran/Unamid) Related:Prices of consumer goods soar in El Sareif, North Darfur (29 June 2014) Abbala kill ten Beni Hussein tribesmen in North Darfur (27 June 2014)Abbala militias abduct North Darfur travelers (30 May 2014)‘Situation in El Sareif Beni Hussein deteriorating’: North Darfur youth (18 May 2014) Abbala, Beni Hussein clash in North Darfur (23 April 2014)
