Civil leaders arrested in Um Dukhun, Central Darfur

Eight civil administration leaders in Um Dukhun locality, Central Darfur, were arrested on Monday. The detentions come against the backdrop of the clashes between Salamat and Misseriya tribesmen that broke out on 19 June, and continued for three days. After the clashes, the Salamat handed a memorandum to the authorities, accusing a number of civil administration leaders of supporting the Misseriya in the clashes, a sheikh told Radio Dabanga from Um Dukhun town. On Monday, the authorities arrested four Fur leaders working in Um Dukhun locality: Dr Hassan Adam Abakar, Humanitarian Aid Commissioner; Idris Osman Mohamed, basic school teacher and Amir of the Islamic Movement; Adam Yagoub Abdel Rasoul, education manager, and Mukhtar Osman Haroun, the deputy chief of the Fur tribe in Um Dukhun locality. Also arrested were Yousif Ishag El Nur, a Misseriya Omda; Ibrahim Suleiman, Omda of the Kenana tribe, Mohamed Ramadan Nimir, of the Tarjem tribe and Chairman of Um Dukhun’s Peaceful Coexistence Committee, and Rizeigat Omda Adam El Doud Doga.
