Port Sudan district residents confront State on removal

On Tuesday, the residents of El Gadisiya illegal district of Port Sudan, capital of Red Sea State, were surprised by a State Government decision to remove the district from Port Sudan City, in spite of ongoing legal procedures in the Supreme Court. Hamid Idris, a member of the Legislative Council in Red Sea State told Radio Dabanga that residents have gone through all the legal procedures in court, which ruled that they may stay in their places. However, the Ministry of Urban planning appealed the case and decided to remove the residences. The residents who have lived in the district for 30 years took the case to the Supreme Court. They also they have official documents proving their eligibility to the district. Idris said that “the citizens have gathered to face the State and the police, who came with removal trucks without bothering to await the Supreme Court’s decision”. He accused the State Governor, Mohammed Taher Aila of having personal ambitions to sell El Gadisiya for investment. Hamid warned the Red Sea State police of manipulation of the law on the protection of citizens. He concluded that the Director of the State police supported Governor Aila in all his decisions regarding the removal of the district without compliance to the law and court orders that are still pending.
