Nyala official refuses transfer of homeless kids from Khartoum

The Minister of Social Welfare in South Darfur, Zeinab Abdelrahman Al Rabie, refused to accept the transfer of 15 homeless children from Khartoum to Nyala, where they would be rehabilitated and handed over to their relatives. The children had been taken from markets of Khartoum State, where they were living without their families.

A source from within the National Council for Child Care in Nyala alleged that the minister’s refusal raised a lot of questions. The inside source said that the minister gave unreasonable excuses of lack of coordination between her ministry and the Ministry of Social Welfare in Khartoum. The minister also had pointed out that a group of homeless kids had recently been infected with diseases in Khartoum State, giving this as an excuse for not receiving the children and giving them shelter. The minister expressed that she was not responsible of them despite all the efforts made by social workers to allow the children to stay under her care, not even for one day.
