North Darfur employees ‘forced to pay for security’

Government employees in Saraf Omra locality in North Darfur complain about a salary deduction for the purpose of providing security during the agricultural season.
“Providing security and maintaining the rule of law is the responsibility of the authorities, not of the citizens,” an employee told Radio Dabanga.
“We are bearing the costs of water provision, health care, and schooling already. So now we are forced to pay for the provision of security as well?”
He explained that the Saraf Omra authorities decided to deduct SDG50 ($8) from the employees and SDG30 ($5) from the locality’s workers. The salaries vary between SDG500 and SDG300.
