Militiamen release kidnapped, elderly South Darfur trader

A merchant was released after being abducted for one week by pro-government militiamen on Thursday in Kass locality, South Darfur. 75-year-old Haj Ismail Abdel Hamid was abducted on 25 June. Abakar El Tom, the spokesman for the Gimir tribe, told Radio Dabanga that the kidnappers had contacted Hamid’s family to ask for a ransom for his release. The family had refused to pay. The militiamen finally contacted the family again, asking them to go to a certain location and pick Hamid up, owing to his age and his health. The family eventually found him safely and in good health at the designated location on Thursday. During the last week of June, a 52-year-old farmer was abducted north of Kass town.
