‘Major military campaign to end rebellion in Darfur’: Al Bashir

President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan has stated that the military campaign carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces in South Kordofan is a prelude to a major military campaign to be launched in the Darfur region. “These operations will be a final ending for the rebellion”. Speaking at the harvest celebration in Gedaref State on Wednesday, Al Bashir repeated his pledge “to put an end to the rebellion in Sudan in the next year”. He said that “the great progress and the excellent job done by the armed forces in several areas of South Kordofan will break the rebellion force.” Al Bashir said that this would “return the region and its people to security, peace and stability”, pledging that Darfur would “return to the way it used to be.” The President added that “the current military campaign paves the way for a major campaign to eliminate mercenaries and agents”. The Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) described Bashir’s assertion that next year is a decisive year for the rebels in Darfur as “lies”. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, Adam Salih Abakar, the military spokesman for the Sudan Liberation Movement under the command of Minni Minawi, replied that on the contrary, the coming period will be “hell for Al Bashir and his National Congress Party”. Abakar pointed out that the SRF forces “are prepared to finally settle with Al Bashir and his militias”.
