Khartoum Round of South Sudan peace talks starts
The Khartoum Round of the South Sudanese peace negotiations, held under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), started in the Sudanese capital on Monday amid tightened security measures.
The presidents of Sudan, Uganda, and South Sudan held a tripartite summit in the Republican Palace in Khartoum this morning, before the Khartoum peace talks between the rivalling South Sudanese factions under the leadership of South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit, and former South Sudanese Vice-President and rebel leader, Riek Machar began.
IGAD announced in a communique last week that the Khartoum round of negotiations, held under supervision of President Al Bashir, have been organised to facilitate IGAD efforts to achieve peace in South Sudan. The round will last for two weeks and will focus on issues of governance and security arrangements.
In a separate session, bilateral economic cooperation between Sudan and South Sudan will be discussed.
It was decided by IGAD leaders on Thursday that President Uhuru Kenyatta will facilitate a third round of face-to-face discussions between Kiir and Machar in Nairobi after the end of the Khartoum talks.
