The Sudanese Minister of Justice Mohammed Bushara Dossa affirmed the interest of the government at its highest levels in the case of Suq Al Mawasir (‘pipes’ market), which was a sort of Ponzi scheme that embezzled much money from local investors. <--break->Dossa said that he will wait for the first basic report of the committee that was set up to follow the case before informing the stake-holders of next steps and the actions taken by his ministry to return the lost rights of the people. He praised the cooperation and response which the committee received from the government and the people of the North Darfur which, according to him, had an impact in the success of the work of the committee.

The ‘Mawasir’ case was particularly sensitive for national authorities because unrest sparked by the scam had threatened civil order in El Fasher, the main bastion of government control in North Darfur. Thousands of angry citizens had blamed the government because of the alleged involvement of ruling party figures in masterminding the scheme. Defrauded investors who attempted a protest march last year to the governors’ mansion were gunned down.
